Chanel has officially announced that its Cruise 2027 collection will debut on April 28 in Biarritz, the historic French coastal town where Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened a branch in 1915. The presentation will also mark Creative Director Matthieu Blazy’s first resort (cruise) collection for the house, set to be unveiled next spring.

While luxury brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Dior have chosen the U.S. for their upcoming cruise shows, Chanel is returning to its roots. “Biarritz plays a fundamental role in the history of Chanel,” said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion and president of Chanel SAS, via WWD. “We are delighted that Matthieu Blazy has chosen this destination, so dear to the house, to present his first vision of the cruise collection.”

Chanel originally found refuge in Biarritz during World War I, establishing a boutique and workshop inside Villa de Larralde, a 19th-century building overlooking the Grande Plage promenade. By then, Coco Chanel had already launched her career as a milliner in Paris (1910), opened a couture atelier in 1912, and expanded with a boutique in Deauville—where she introduced her groundbreaking sportswear aesthetic that freed women from restrictive corsetry.

Coco Chanel is also credited with pioneering the modern resort collection. In 1919, she designed a line specifically for the fashionable women who vacationed in Biarritz. Once a destination celebrated by Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, the Basque resort town has long attracted an international crowd—though today, it’s equally renowned for its surf culture.

Blazy’s debut cruise collection is expected to honor this rich heritage while ushering in a new chapter for Chanel’s storied legacy.
