Darryn Peterson Heads to Utah as the Jazz Select Him No. 2 Overall in the 2026 NBA Draft

Darryn Peterson’s NBA journey officially began Tuesday night as the Utah Jazz selected the Kansas standout with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Widely viewed as one of the top prospects in this year’s class alongside No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa, Peterson now becomes just the second player in Utah Jazz history to be selected with the second overall pick. The franchise is hoping the dynamic 6-foot-5 guard can become the cornerstone of its rebuild and help return the team to playoff contention.
Before hearing his name called at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Peterson made a statement on the red carpet in a sharply tailored black suit paired with a crisp white dress shirt, classic black tie, and polished black dress shoes. The clean and timeless look reflected the confidence he carried throughout the draft process.
“My goal is to win a championship, and as soon as possible,” Peterson said. “We just need a few more pieces.”

Despite dealing with health-related setbacks during his lone season at Kansas, Peterson remained one of the most talented players in the country. He averaged 20.2 points per game and showcased an elite scoring ability that made him a lock to be one of the first names called on draft night.
Now healthy and eager to prove himself, Peterson is focused on silencing any remaining doubts.
“The celebration stops tonight,” he said. “I got drafted today, but tomorrow, I’m an NBA player.”
With rising young talent already in place and Peterson now joining the fold, the Jazz believe they have found a future star. As Utah continues building toward contention, all eyes will be on the rookie guard as he looks to turn lofty expectations into results.
