In a move set to blur the lines between luxury and mass retail, John Galliano is officially returning to the fashion spotlight—this time through a two-year creative partnership with Zara. The iconic designer will “re-author” the brand’s archives, signaling a bold new chapter for both Galliano and the global retailer.

The collaboration marks Galliano’s first major project since his final Artisanal presentation for Maison Margiela in 2024. Speaking during Paris Fashion Week, the designer revealed that he has already begun immersing himself in Zara’s past collections. “I’ve been curating some of Zara’s recent archives,” he shared, describing the initiative as an opportunity to reinterpret rather than simply revisit. “The idea is that I will re-author them.”

The partnership was born from Galliano’s growing relationship with Marta Ortega Pérez, chair of Inditex and daughter of founder Amancio Ortega. Their connection developed through the MOP Foundation, known for its acclaimed exhibitions spotlighting legendary photographers such as Steven Meisel and Irving Penn. “Through those exhibitions, we started to strike up a friendship,” Galliano explained, noting his admiration for Ortega Pérez’s openness and creative vision.

Under Ortega Pérez’s leadership since 2022, Zara has steadily deepened its ties with high fashion, collaborating with designers like Narciso Rodriguez and Stefano Pilati, while also releasing capsule collections featuring figures such as Kate Moss. Still, Galliano’s partnership stands apart—its two-year scope offering an unprecedented level of creative continuity within Zara’s fast-paced model.

For Galliano, the project represents uncharted territory. “It’s not something I’ve done before,” he admitted. “That newness, the excitement, the process—it’s been quite fun.” Working quietly from an atelier on the outskirts of Paris since January, the designer is experimenting with silhouettes and construction through a series of early toiles. While details remain tightly under wraps, he hints at a direction rooted in form and proportion, transcending traditional categories. “One could safely say it’s beyond gender and beyond seasons,” he noted.

Equally compelling is the scale of the endeavor. Zara’s global reach offers Galliano a platform unlike any he’s previously experienced—bringing his vision to a far broader audience. “To deliver fashion through that enormous platform—that’s thrilling,” he said, adding that access to the brand’s vast resources only heightens the creative possibilities.

The first collection from the partnership is slated to arrive in September, setting the stage for what could become one of the most defining collaborations in contemporary fashion. As Galliano reflects on this new phase, he does so with a sense of optimism: act three, as he puts it, may just be the most exciting yet.
