Who would’ve thought South Jersey’s own — and Howard University student — Gavin Pennington would have The Illest Club taking over New York Fashion Week?

After building momentum with pop-ups in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and Philadelphia, the young designer and CEO pulled up to NYC on February 13 with one of the most creative rollouts of the week. To build anticipation for the official store pop-up, Pennington deployed a hazmat truck across the city — transforming the streets into his runway and giving fans the chance to score free pieces ahead of the Fashion Week event.

The truck hit three different locations across the city, tossing out free clothing to crowds that quickly gathered around the spectacle. The guerrilla-style marketing moment instantly generated buzz both on the ground and online.

We just throwing clothes,” he teased in a TikTok video. “If you catch it, you got it.”

Pennington launched The Illest Club at just 18 years old. Though proudly rooted in South Jersey, he has always made it clear that the brand reps Philadelphia — a city that shaped his vision. In fact, he’s said he may have never started the brand if he hadn’t attended high school in Philly.

Now, the co-signs are rolling in. Lil Baby has been spotted wearing Illest Club, along with NBA talents Justin Edwards and Jeremiah Fears. Even Kiyan Anthony of the Syracuse Orange has stepped out in the brand.

From South Jersey roots to NYFW activation, The Illest Club isn’t just building hype — it’s building legacy.
