Sylvia Rhone to Be Honored With BET’s Ultimate Icon Award

Legendary music executive Sylvia Rhone is set to receive the prestigious Ultimate Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards, airing live on June 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The Ultimate Icon Award recognizes trailblazers whose influence has extended far beyond their respective industries, celebrating individuals whose achievements have reshaped culture and inspired generations. Few figures embody that distinction more than Rhone, whose groundbreaking career has left an indelible mark on the music business.
A true pioneer, Rhone made history as the first woman to lead a major music company when she was appointed Chairman and CEO of Elektra Records under Warner Music Group at the age of 42. During her tenure, the label was home to acclaimed artists including Metallica, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, En Vogue, and Natalie Merchant. Her appointment also made her one of the first African American executives to hold such a prominent leadership position within the industry.
Rhone’s remarkable career began as an assistant at Buddah Records before she steadily climbed the ranks to become one of the most respected executives in music. She later served as CEO of Universal Motown, overseeing a roster that included Akon, India.Arie, and Erykah Badu. Throughout her decades-long career, she has worked closely with some of music’s most influential artists, including Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne, Tracy Chapman, Brandy, Kid Cudi, Anita Baker, Tamia, MC Lyte, Yolanda Adams, Fabolous, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and many others.
Most recently, Rhone served as Chairman and CEO of Epic Records, a position she stepped down from in 2025 after helping guide the label through another successful era.
“Sylvia Rhone’s influence extends far beyond the music business and into the culture itself,” said Connie Orlando, EVP and Head of Programming at BET. “She championed artists and executives, shattered ceilings that had never been broken, and redefined what leadership looks like for women and people of color in every boardroom that followed. Her legacy is heard in the music, seen in the careers she built, and felt in the generation of leaders walking the path she cleared.”
With a career spanning more than five decades, Rhone’s impact on music, culture, and executive leadership continues to resonate, making her a fitting recipient of one of BET’s highest honors.
