The 2027 Met Gala is taking a different approach to fashion’s biggest night, shifting the spotlight from high-fashion spectacle to the everyday pieces that shape our wardrobes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has announced its new exhibition theme, “ExtraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” replacing the previously planned John Galliano retrospective, titled “Horizons.”

The upcoming exhibition will explore the relationship between everyday clothing and high fashion, examining how designers transform familiar wardrobe staples into something extraordinary. Denim, T-shirts and other everyday essentials will serve as a central focus, highlighting the creative possibilities behind pieces that are often overlooked.

The exhibition will also explore the artistic potential of everyday and disposable materials, including paper, plastic and aluminum, examining how designers incorporate unconventional materials into fashion and challenge traditional ideas of luxury and craftsmanship.

Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, organized the exhibition with assistance from Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben.

The change in direction follows the cancellation of the planned John Galliano retrospective in August. Following public criticism surrounding the designer’s past antisemitic and racist remarks, Galliano and the museum ultimately decided not to move forward with the exhibition.

In an Instagram statement, Galliano expressed sadness over the decision, explaining that after reflection and discussions with the museum and those involved, he believed it was best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.

The designer was previously prosecuted following incidents between October 2010 and February 2011 involving antisemitic and racist remarks, some of which were captured on camera. In September 2011, a Paris court found Galliano guilty of public insults based on religious affiliation, race or ethnicity and imposed a suspended fine.

With its new theme, the 2027 Met Gala exhibition will shift the conversation toward the intersection of everyday dressing, creativity and fashion’s ability to elevate the ordinary.

The 2027 Met Gala will take place on May 3, 2027, in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
