JAY-Z Reportedly Taps Himself to Headline Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show

JAY-Z could be preparing to trade his role behind the scenes for a starring moment on one of the biggest stages in entertainment. According to a report from Puck, the Roc Nation founder has selected himself to headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show in the Los Angeles area in February 2027.
The report, citing multiple sources, states that the Brooklyn-born rap icon emerged as the reported choice after Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were also considered. As Roc Nation’s key decision-maker for halftime show bookings, JAY-Z has significant influence over the selection process. However, neither the NFL nor Roc Nation responded to Puck’s request for comment, and an official announcement has yet to confirm the reported booking.
If finalized, the performance would bring JAY-Z full circle with the partnership he established with the NFL in 2019. Under the arrangement, Roc Nation took on a creative role in shaping the halftime show, with the goal of expanding its cultural impact and connecting with a broader audience. The league reportedly extended its partnership with Roc Nation for another five years in 2024.

Since then, the collaboration has helped bring major artists to the Super Bowl stage, including Kendrick Lamar in 2025 and Bad Bunny in 2026. A JAY-Z headlining performance would represent a significant milestone in that relationship, turning the longtime architect behind the show into its main attraction.
The timing also aligns with a major year for the rapper’s legacy. Now 56, JAY-Z is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, alongside the 25th anniversary of his influential 2001 release, The Blueprint. Both projects remain defining moments in hip-hop, and their anniversaries have helped fuel renewed attention around his catalog.
His live performances have also demonstrated his enduring commercial appeal. According to Puck, JAY-Z generated more than $42 million from three sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium in July. He also headlined Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic on May 30, performing before a crowd at the 80,000-capacity event, and reportedly earned $12 million from a sold-out performance in Paris.
Beyond the numbers, his recent shows have delivered the kind of cultural moments that could translate to the Super Bowl stage. During the second of two sold-out performances at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, JAY-Z reunited the Fugees onstage, creating a major moment for fans of the legendary hip-hop group. A halftime appearance could similarly feature high-profile guest performances, with his wife, global superstar Beyoncé, likely to fuel additional speculation about potential surprises.

JAY-Z’s influence extends well beyond the stage. His career milestones include his 2021 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, while an eight-part HBO documentary featuring music producer Rick Rubin has added another chapter to the ongoing examination of his legacy.
Still, a potential halftime performance would differ from recent bookings centered on artists with major contemporary chart hits. JAY-Z has not released a studio album since 2017’s 4:44, and his most recent major chart success as a featured artist includes Beyoncé’s 2013 hit “Drunk in Love,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rather than relying primarily on current radio hits, his performance could draw from a catalog spanning three decades, connecting generations of hip-hop fans through records that helped shape the genre.
According to Puck, an announcement could come as early as this weekend, when JAY-Z is scheduled to perform at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium. The venue’s proximity to the planned Super Bowl LXI location would provide a fitting backdrop for a potential reveal.
For now, the reported selection remains unconfirmed. If the news becomes official, JAY-Z’s Super Bowl halftime appearance would mark a major moment for the rap legend, Roc Nation and the NFL, bringing one of hip-hop’s most influential figures from behind the curtain to center stage.
